Tow truck driver helping motorist struck, killed
10:36 2006 03 09 PST MARTINEZ -- The driver of a car that struck and killed a tow truck driver Wednesday night faces charges of manslaughter and drunken driving, the California Highway Patrol said today.
Jody Ehling, 42, of Concord, a driver for American Tow Co., was next to his truck on the shoulder of westbound Highway 4 near Interstate 680 when he was hit just before 9:30 p.m. Ehling was helping a stranded motorist when he was struck by a Volvo sedan driven by David Blackmer, 55, of Benicia, the CHP said.
Witnesses told the CHP that Blackmer had been driving erratically before the collision.
After striking Ehling, the Volvo continued on and overturned twice.
CHP Officer Tom Maguire said Ehling was pronounced dead at 10:15 p.m. at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.
Blackmer was hospitalized with minor injuries. When he is released, he will be booked on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter, Maguire said.
